Get Organised with Google Photos

Taking photos is so easy nowadays. Anytime you see anything you want to capture, you can instantly photograph it. Out at a cool new restaurant? Snap. With your friends at a party?  Snap! See a cute dog on the street? Snap, snap! Every little moment of our day-to-day lives can be easily captured to look back on for years to come.

However, this does come with a downside - it can get quite difficult to organise your pictures. Going through a camera roll of thousands of photos to find a specific one can take a lot of time, and you may not even be able to find the image you’re on the hunt for. You can also run out of storage on your device, meaning you won’t be able to take any more photos. That is why Google Photos is the perfect tool to organise your photos with, as it has both organisation and space-saving tools on hand.

No matter what type of device you have, Google Photos functions on them all, meaning you can switch between your phone, tablet, and computer when using it. All you need is an internet connection, and all your media will be available to you.

Google Photos allows you to share high quality photos and albums between different devices. This means that you can easily share pictures with friends and family, even if their operating system (OS) system is different to yours. That way, no matter the device, you have access to all your shared memories - conveniently organised in one album.

Here’s how to get started:

  • On a mobile device, download the Google Photos app from either the App Store or Google Play store. If you’re on a web browser, pull up the Google Photos webpage
  • Sign in to the app with your Google account or if you don’t have one sign up for one here
  • When the app is installed on your mobile device, you’ll be asked if you want to sync and back up your photos onto Google Photos
    • The upside to doing this immediately is that you can ensure all your media is backed up online, so if you happen to lose or break your phone you can have peace of mind that none of your media has been lost forever
  • Once this is done, you can begin to organise your photos

Here are some different ways to get your media organised:

To create a simple photo album

  • On the app,  tap on the “Library” tab in the bottom right-hand corner
  • Click on “New Album”
  • You will be prompted to add a title to the album and then select photos
  • Tap on any of the images you want to add to the album and when you’re finished tap “Add” in the top right corner

If you’re using a web browser

  • On the left-hand side of the web page, select “Albums”
  • Then click on the “Create Album” button and begin adding your photos

Save your favourite photos

If there are certain pictures you go back to constantly, or you want to save them to share with a friend or for printing. ‘Starring’ the photo and saving it as a ‘favourite’ categorises them for quick access.

  • To favourite a photo, open up any photo or video on in your library
  • In the top right corner, there is a star button
  • Tap the star to “favourite” the image, and it will be put into the ‘favourites’ section in your library

AI (automatic organisation)

Google Photos has an impressive AI system which will automatically organise your media into categories such as people, places, and things. It then further organises your images into more specific categories. For example, under ‘Things,’ Google Photos will further organise your images into categories like ‘Sky,’ ‘Parks’ and ‘Aeroplanes.’

If you type a word such as dog into the search bar at the top of the app, all images with dogs will be shown to you, allowing you to find the image you want more easily.
