What is U-matic?

U‑matic was introduced by Sony in 1971 as the world’s first videocassette format. Designed for professional, educational, and institutional use, it replaced bulky open‑reel systems and made video recording more practical and reliable.

As technology advanced, U‑matic faced competition from newer formats such as Betacam and other broadcast‑grade systems. These offered improved image quality, smaller equipment, and more efficient workflows.
